Fantasy Sketches - The Troll King Dovregubben

Description

There's a play I have not seen or read named Peer Gynt by Henrik Ibsen. You probably don't know it either, but you almost certainly know a song from it: In The Hall of the Mountain King by Edvard Grieg. It's apparently from a dream sequence within the play in which the main character imagines himself a prisoner of the Troll King Dovregubben and a hoard of Trolls, Imp-Trolls, Trollwives, and Gnomes who want him killed.

The song is rather lively, but for some reason I imaged the liveliness coming from the commotion in the court rather than the King himself - who I drew slouching.

Trolls are tricky because there aren't any definite characteristics. They're usually big, except when they're small. They're usually ugly, except when they're cute. They're usually evil, except when they're good. There's also the problem of differentiating them from Orcs, Goblins, Ogres, etc. I haven't found a solution yet, but I'm just approaching them one Troll at a time.

Trolls- the one race no one can really decide on what they look like other than "kinda primate-like"
