Gremlins

Description

In the same way that Gnomes are Elementals of the Earth, Gremlins are creatures of technology and invention. They have always been here, influencing humanity in our technological progress, but their population started to rise exponentially in the Victorian Era, thereby igniting the Industrial Revolution. By the 1920s, Gremlins had split into factions, some more malicious than others. The malicious Gremlins began sabotaging humanity's machines, particularly their aircrafts. This became so common by the World Wars, that humanity, particularly the air forces of Terra Cognita (the Lands We Know), became aware of Gremlins for the first time.  Beneficial Gremlins continue helping humanity advance, but that comes  with a price - not only negative environmental impacts, but allowing for new avenues for malicious Gremlins to attack us (namely sabotaging our computer systems with viruses and hacking).

Gremlins are small, measuring an average of about 15 cm in height. Unlike most supernatural creatures, such as Fairies and Gnomes, Gremlins abhor the natural world. Instead of harnessing nature for magical purposes, they create technology to enrich their lives. Instead of using animals as mounts, they build vehicles and suits to get around.

When I was younger, I loved a book called The Encyclopedia of Things That Never Were. I only learned later in life that a lot of the information from it was invented, rather than being taken from real folklore and mythology. I got the idea of Gremlins as Technology Elementals from there, and it sort of stuck with me. The Gremlin's armour is inspired by the Gremlin from the Bugs Bunny short Falling Hare.

Just a thought, but maybe one of these dudes could be the Bat-Mite to Blackbird?
